Vendredi 13 novembre 2015, 21h20 locales. Une détonation retentit près du Stade de France, au nord de Paris. Deux autres suivent. Au même moment, des terrasses parisiennes sont mitraillées et le Bataclan devient le théâtre d'une tuerie. La France vient de plonger dans l'horreur.
À Saint-Denis, en banlieue nord, se joue une rencontre de football amicale France-Allemagne. Le public entend la première explosion. Pas de panique, le match continue. Mais c'est en fait un kamikaze qui vient de se faire exploser à l'extérieur du stade, une première en France. À 21h50, deuxième attentat-suicide, puis un troisième à 21h53.
Un Portugais de 63 ans, Manuel Colaco Dias, est tué. Le premier des 130 morts de cette nuit effroyable, au cours de laquelle des centaines de personnes seront aussi blessées. Présent dans les gradins du stade, le président François Hollande est exfiltré. Direction Paris.
Là, dans les rues prises d'assaut par une jeunesse branchée qui profite d'une douce soirée automnale, le pire se joue.

21h25, le restaurant Le Petit Cambodge et le bar Le Carillon, dans le nord-est de Paris, sont arrosés de balles. Trois hommes fauchent des vies à la Kalachnikov. Au hasard.
Une scène surréaliste, raconte Florence, tout le monde «à terre» et un jeune homme qui porte dans ses bras une fille qui a «l'air morte».
Le «commando des terrasses» poursuit son macabre parcours, devant le bar À la bonne bière et la pizzeria Casa nostra, puis le bistrot La Belle équipe. Chaque fois, les assaillants surgissent d'une Seat noire et tuent avec un calme olympien.
Damien remarque la Kalachnikov d'un jihadiste, «disproportionnellement grande», et son air «paisible», «presque un léger sourire aux lèvres». Et surtout, «des salves à n'en plus finir».
Par terre, du sang et des morts - 39 personnes tuées dans ces quartiers embourgeoisés de la capitale.
Un des jihadistes finit par se faire exploser dans un restaurant du boulevard Voltaire.
À quelques encablures de là, le groupe de rock californien Eagles of Death Metal chante «Kiss the devil» («Embrasse le diable»), au Bataclan. La salle de spectacles est pleine à craquer lorsqu'un troisième commando fait irruption. Il est 21h40.
Le concert devient carnage. Là aussi, trois jihadistes français, tous rentrés de Syrie, tuent autant qu'ils peuvent, par rafales ou au coup par coup. Quatre-vingt-dix morts. Les survivants, souvent blessés, se cachent, font le mort parmi les cadavres.
21h54, un commissaire de police intervient, le premier. La vision est «indescriptible», «des centaines de corps» de morts, de blessés ou de rescapés «enchevêtrés les uns aux autres, devant le bar, dans la fosse».
Très rapidement, avec son équipier, le policier abat un assaillant, dont la ceinture explose.
Règne alors «un silence glacial», rompu seulement par les sonneries des téléphones portables qui retentissent dans les poches des morts.
À 00h18, l'assaut des forces d'élite est finalement donné. Les kamikazes se font sauter. C'est la fin. Les enquêteurs découvrent une «boucherie».
Le coordinateur des attaques, le Belge Abdelhamid Abaaoud, figure des jihadistes francophones du groupe Etat islamique en Syrie, mais aussi assaillant des terrasses, sera tué le 18 novembre par la police dans une planque à Saint-Denis. Et le seul membre des commandos encore en vie, Salah Abdeslam, passera quatre mois en cavale avant d'être arrêté.
