Le tireur a fait feu depuis sa chambre d'hôtel au 32e étage du Mandalay Bay, un établissement qui surplombe l'esplanade où le concert avait lieu. Il était seul et surarmé, selon la police. Plus de dix fusils ont été retrouvés dans sa chambre.
Robert Hayes, un pompier de Los Angeles qui assistait au concert, a décrit sur Fox News une «scène de guerre». La densité de la foule offrait selon lui une cible facile. «C'était comme abattre une vache dans un couloir.»

Le tireur a été identifié comme étant Stephen Craig Paddock, un homme blanc de 64 ans. Il a été retrouvé mort par les unités d'intervention spéciales (SWAT) dans sa chambre d'hôtel.
Il habitait la ville de Mesquite, 18 000 habitants, située à quelque 120 kilomètres de Las Vegas, dans le Nevada.
Ce retraité, un ancien comptable, n'était pas connu des services de police et n'avait pas de casier judiciaire. Selon son frère, Eric Paddock qui s'est exprimé sur plusieurs médias locaux, Stephen Paddock aimait «jouer dans les casinos» et n'avait pas de «convictions religieuses» connues.
Cette fusillade à Las Vegas est déjà la plus meurtrière dans l'histoire moderne aux États-Unis. Même si le bilan n'est pas encore définitif, il dépasse déjà celui de la fusillade dans une discothèque d'Orlando, en juin 2016, qui avait fait 49 morts.
Le groupe État islamique (EI) a revendiqué la fusillade affirmant que Stephen Paddock, alias «Abou Abdelberr l'Américain» selon l'EI, était un «soldat du califat» qui s'était «converti à l'islam il y a quelques mois».
«Un soldat du califat (Abou Abdelberr l'Américain) --que Dieu l'accepte-- muni d'armes automatiques et de munitions diverses a, depuis un hôtel donnant sur un concert de musique, ouvert le feu sur un de ces rassemblements, faisant 600 morts et blessés, jusqu'à l'épuisement de ses munitions, avant de tomber en martyr», indique l'EI dans un communiqué.
Le FBI a cependant déclaré n'avoir établi «aucun lien à ce stade avec un groupe terroriste international».
Le président américain Donald Trump a dénoncé lundi un acte relevant du «mal absolu», sans mentionner la revendication du groupe Etat islamique. Il a observé une minute de silence et indiqué qu'il se rendrait à Las Vegas mercredi.
La Maison-Blanche a jugé que le débat sur les armes était «prématuré». «Il y a une enquête en cours. Les motivations du tireur restent à déterminer. Il serait prématuré de parler de politique quand nous ne connaissons pas tous les faits», a déclaré Sarah Huckabee Sanders, porte-parole de la Maison-Blanche.
Le pape François a déclaré qu'il était «profondément attristé» par la «tragédie dénuée de sens».
Le président français Emmanuel Macron a fait part de son émotion, estimant que les victimes étaient mortes de la «violence contemporaine».
Le président russe Vladimir Poutine a adressé ses condoléances à Donald Trump dans un télégramme, qualifiant l'attaque de «crime» qui «choque par sa cruauté».
La Tour Eiffel sera éteinte lundi soir, en hommage aux victimes des attaques de Las Vegas et Marseille dimanche, a annoncé la maire de Paris Anne Hidalgo sur Twitter.
