2864. “Me doing this now, I have some sort of satisfaction, knowing that he’s always with me in the kitchen.” When Reuel Vincent (aka Vince) was about 14 years old, he moved to NYC from Trinidad & Tobago the week before 9/11. Settling in Brooklyn, he followed the traditional path of going to high school before going off to college in Michigan, where he began studying Physical Therapy & Nursing. During his 5th year there, however, Vince had a conversation with his aunt, who ran her own catering company, and realized that he wanted to become a chef. Leaving college behind, he returned home to NYC and started working as a dishwasher for his aunt’s company, learning everything about the industry through @youtube videos and observing others. Though he kept super glue in his backpack because of how often he accidentally cut himself and once experienced a breakdown in his aunt’s office, Vince worked his way up to becoming the head chef of the company during his 5 years there. He then took two steps backwards to become a chef tournant at @oneworldnyc, and over the last 4 years, has worked his way up to the role of banquet chef here. Vince now handles the creation of the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter menus for events here, but loves the pressure and channels the spirit of his dad every day in the kitchen. Vince’s dad worked as a cab driver back in Trinidad & Tobago and loved cooking, but he never had the opportunity to work professionally as a chef. Therefore, using his dad as one of his driving forces, Vince is carrying that torch for the family and uses it to fuel his hunger to become a better chef every day!
